It goes on pizza, sandwiches, salads and a plethora of stuffed pasta. Perhaps it's no surprise that mozzarella has surpassed cheddar to become America's favorite cheese.
For the second year in a row the Italian cheese has beat out cheddar as the most available cheese in the United States, Modern Farmer reports. On average, Americans are downing 11.5 pounds of mozzarella annually compared to 9.6 pounds of cheddar.
Cream, Neufchatel, Provolone and Swiss are other cheeses favored by Americans but none come close ot the popularity of mozzarella, a fresh cheese that originated in Southern Italy.
