Ice cream and pickles? This typical pregnancy craving may not be so bad after all. That's according to this nifty infographic featuring 20 weird food pairings that are actually delicious.
Some pairings aren't so surprising. Strawberries and basil? Yum! Kale and lemon? Naturally delicious. But others are stranger. For instance, there's mushrooms and apricots, olives and white chocolate, and coffee and pork. Now, before your turn your nose up at these weird food pairings let's take a look at why they might work.
MUSHROOMS AND APRICOTS
These fall into the "umami" category because they contain savory flavors. When sautéed the mushrooms give off a natural sweetness that is enhanced by a dipping sauce containing apricot.
OLIVES AND WHITE CHOCOLATE
At first look this combo seems bizarre. What do briny olives have to do with white chocolate? This pairing falls under the category of "salty" and when combined with a neutral element such as bread it comes together nicely.
COFFEE AND PORK
Perhaps not such a weird food pairing, after all. We've seen coffee-rubbed steak before so why not try the same with pork? The sweetness of the meat will balance the bitterness of the coffee. Singapore style coffee ribs, anyone?
