For the most delicious lobster roll, start by cooking your lobster to perfection. You can source pre-cooked lobster from the grocery store but we think this dish tastes far better if you can make it all from scratch.

We’ve shared an easy lobster dressing mix for this lobster roll sandwich, but you can vary the ingredients in the mixture. Whatever you choose to include, it’s best not to skip the freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice, as this enhances the flavor of the lobster meat.
For added complexity you can also introduce elements including scallions or celery to bring a freshness to the mayonnaise mix. Other herbs, such as parsley, bring a slightly peppery taste to the mix and pair well with the lobster.
While lobster is the classic seafood option for this dish, you can swap in alternative East Coast ingredients such as crab. Crab tends to be a little sweeter than lobster, and is flakier in texture.
Types of Buns and Dressing Options
In the recipe above we’ve suggested using a traditional fluffy white hot dog bun, split down the middle. The fluffiness of the hot dog bun contrasts expertly with the firm and dense texture of the lobster. If you have the time, you can toast the bun to add a crispy texture to the dish.
It’s also possible to use a soft brioche bun, which will add even more sweetness to the roll. For the dressing, a mayonnaise base is the go-to for pairing with lobster.
The creaminess of the mayonnaise enhances the delicate flavor of the lobster. You can experiment with the flavors in the mayonnaise, however, and mix in complementary pairings including truffle and garlic, as desired.
How to Present it
Lobster is traditionally considered a fine dining food, but the presentation of a mouth-watering lobster roll doesn’t need to be fussy. Lining the rolls with a lettuce leaf adds an enticing pop of color, and then all you need to do is spoon the mixture on top in a casual way.
A sprinkling of sliced scallions or herbs, such as basil for garnish, makes the presentation look more finished. If you want to add an elevated touch to your rolls, you can arrange them on a wooden board surrounded by wedges of lemon for guests to help themselves. Or, for a playful idea, serve with your preferred flavor of crisps for a filling lunchtime dish.
