Camphor is a Michelin-starred modern French bistro in Downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District. Opened in 2022 by hospitality group No. 8 Hospitality, led by Sarah Lam and Cyrus Batchan, the restaurant earned its first Michelin star within its first year and has retained the distinction since.
Executive Chef Max Boonthanakit leads the kitchen, drawing on experience at Kato, Nightshade, and Blue by Alain Ducasse in Bangkok. At Camphor, he revisits the structure of a classic French bistro through a contemporary lens, focusing on clean flavors, balance, and precision. His cooking reflects both classical training and a global perspective, resulting in dishes that feel refined yet restrained.
The menu moves between shareable small plates and composed main courses, with desserts that nod to Boonthanakit’s pastry background. The bar program, directed by Andrew Paniagua, offers classic cocktails with subtle French influences, alongside a wine list centered on French and European producers. Camphor is also known for its extensive selection of rare and vintage Chartreuse, curated by Batchan.
Designed as a neighborhood restaurant with an urban edge, Camphor balances polish with approachability. The dining room’s energy mirrors the Arts District around it, while the kitchen maintains a disciplined, ingredient-focused approach.
Camphor has quickly established itself as a defining presence in Los Angeles dining, combining hospitality, technical rigor, and a modern interpretation of French cuisine.
