We talk about Michele Casadei Massari

Selected as the first outside chef to design the UN’s Anniversary dinner, Massari crafted a menu rooted in conviviality, culture, and global understanding.

The Chef

Michele Casadei Massari is an Italian-born chef whose work blends culinary precision, scientific understanding, and a deep respect for cultural traditions. Raised in Riccione and shaped by Bologna’s intellectual landscape, Massari studied at the Università di Bologna before turning fully toward cooking, bringing with him an analytical approach that still informs his cuisine today. He moved to New York in 2009, first opening Piccolo Caffè, a series of intimate Italian cafés known for their attention to quality and understated charm.

In 2017, he created Lucciola, an 18-seat restaurant on the Upper West Side where tasting menus highlight exceptional ingredients, restrained compositions, and a focus on emotional resonance. The restaurant’s “no menu” format reflects Massari’s instinctive style: dishes built around the finest ingredients available each day, prepared with clarity rather than embellishment.

Massari’s culinary philosophy centers on the idea that food should communicate values, not ego. Minimalist plating, thoughtful sourcing, and an empathy-driven understanding of cultural and dietary needs underpin his work. This approach has earned him the trust of major institutions and global brands. He serves as Corporate Executive Chef for Ferrari North America, contributes to PepsiCo’s international innovation team, and is Culinary Director for Parmigiano Reggiano and Pastificio Felicetti.

Beyond the kitchen, Massari operates at the intersection of food and culture. As Culinary Director of Casa I Wonder, he curates gastronomic experiences at major film festivals, including Venice and Sundance, crafting menus for filmmakers, producers, and artists. He is also a cofounder and board advisor of I Wonder Pictures, Italy’s leading independent film distribution company.

In 2025, his career reached a historic milestone when he was selected as the chef for the United Nations’ 80th Anniversary Gala, becoming the first outside chef to design and execute the dinner. For Massari, the event encapsulated his belief that cuisine can dissolve borders and create genuine connection: a shared table where simplicity, culture, and intention guide the experience.
