A train carrying supplies for José Andrés’ Ukraine relief campaign has been hit by a Russian missile, according to reports. The Spanish chef tweeted yesterday that a train bound for one of his community kitchens in Eastern Ukraine was destroyed when it was targeted and hit by a Russian missile.
One train car was destroyed in the attack, but the rest of the food on the train was salvageable. Nobody was hurt in the attack said, Andrés.
The train was en route to supply the relief efforts of World Central Kitchen, working throughout the country to feed those in need. World Central Kitchen CEO Nate Mook said that 34 pallets of food was destroyed in the strike, adding that the attack took place only 2000 feet from a passenger station, but he did not provide any further details of the location.
World Central Kitchen’s relief work will continue having served millions of meals. Since April, the non-profit has partnered with local organisations to serve over 300,000 meals a day. This was not the first time one of WCK’s partners in Ukraine has come under attack. In April, a community kitchen was hit in a missile strike in Kharkiv.
