Education of the Senses is a series of food–inspired pictures by photographer Kathryn Obermaier. It evolved from a wet plate workshop she took in NYC in 2010: during the class, Obermaier spent a weekend photographing two small eggplants, and felt a chemistry between the complicated photographic process, and the simplicity of the vegetables.
In 2011, she moved to Italy with her husband for a year. Wandering through Siena’s food markets, she found her subject: an olive-wood cutting board became her set, the windows her main light source. With a 8x10 camera, she spent hours looking at fruits and vegetables: the subjects never repeated themselves — they came alive, always exciting individual characters.
Kathryn Obermaier is a freelance photographer currently based in New York. She is a graduate from The International Center of Photography’s program in Documentary and Photojournalism, and has a Bachelors in Fine Art from The University of New Mexico. Before moving to New York she worked at the Santa Fe Photographic workshops, working with a variety of photographers, such as Sam Abell, Steve McCurry, and Dennis Keeley. Her work has been exhibited in the US, Europe, and South America, and she has worked with the Nuru Project and Acumens Funds, Dignity travelling exhibition and auction. In 2011, Obermaier began learning wet plate collodion, and fell in love the the tactile process, and the detail and magic that it could produce.
