Tips & Tricks

For the tastiest frozen margarita recipe, you can keep it simple. It only needs a balance of the four ingredients in the recipe above to create the desired texture and taste.

Make sure when blending the cocktail you stop once it’s reached a slushy consistency. You will ideally need a blender to make this recipe, as it’s difficult to achieve the right texture without one. A food processor will work as a suitable alternative, though, if you don’t have a blender available.

It’s advisable to use tequila blanco for this recipe which has a clean taste and lets the bright citrus flavors shine through. Aged tequilas, such as reposados, will have their flavors muted by the ice, so it’s better to save these varieties for sipping occasions or non-frozen cocktails to enjoy their complex flavor profile.

Keep in mind that, whichever variety you choose, each tequila brand will vary in alcohol content which will affect the final levels in your frozen cocktail.

Glassware and Garnishing Options

The classic glass to use for this cocktail is, of course, the margarita glass, and it works well with the frozen variety too. It’s easy to rim this glass with the salt, and you can overfill the glass for an inviting peak at the top. A lime wedge or wheel is enough to finish this delicious frozen cocktail.

For added color on the rim, some bartenders will add a sprinkling of lime zest to the sea salt. You rim the glasses in the same way, but it’ll add a hint of green to the outside of the glass.

Or you could try mixing in a spice to the salt, to add a little heat to your cocktail. While it’s traditional to rim the glasses with a lime wedge, you can achieve better results if you use agave or sugar syrup to rim the glass instead. This gives you greater control over where the salt sticks to the glass, and helps the salt to stick better too.

Flavored Variations to Try

It’s incredibly easy to twist a margarita, as its tart, citrus base pairs effortlessly with a whole host of different fruits. A strawberry margarita is a delicious variation, where the sweetness of the strawberries balances the sour citrus taste of the lime.

All you need to do is add a handful of frozen strawberries to the blender when mixing your frozen margarita. You can also taste the cocktail once blended, and add more strawberries as needed.

For a colorful and elevated variation, you could try adding prickly pear. With a mix of flavors likened to watermelon and strawberry, this ingredient also gives the cocktail a playful, pink hue that’s made for a sunny day.

Lastly, peaches pair perfectly with the sour, tart notes of a margarita, and are another juicy ingredient to add to the blender during the summer months.

Now you’re equipped with all the knowledge you need to know how to make a frozen margarita, it’s time to explore a world of tequila-based drinks and cocktails.
