
James Beard Awards
An annual awards ceremony presented by the James Beard Foundation in honour of the most outstanding food and drink professionals in the US.
The James Beard Foundation Awards are annual awards presented by the James Beard Foundation and honour the most outstanding culinary professionals in the United States. The awards, named after the “father of American cuisine”, were first established in 1990 and have since expanded to include restaurant design and media restaurant design awards. Up until 2015 the media, chef and restaurant awards were presented at a dinner in New York City; thereafter the Foundation’s annual gala moved to Chicago where they will continue to be hosted through to 2027. The awards cover 20 categories and are voted on by more than 600 culinary professionals, including previous award winners. Categories include; The Rising Star Award, sponsored by S.Pellegrino, highlighting the best up-and-coming chefs in the American food industry and those most ‘likely to make a significant impact on the industry in years to come.’ Previous winners have included: Daniela Soto-Innes, David Chang and Cristina Tossi. The Outstanding Restaurant award is presented by S.Pellegrino® Sparkling Natural Mineral Water and celebrates a US restaurant that serves as a national standard-bearer of consistent quality and excellence in food, atmosphere. Previous winners include Zahav in Philadelphia and Topolobampo in Chicago. Other awards include; Best New Restaurant, Outstanding Chef Award, Rising Star, Chef of the Year, Outstanding Restaurant and Outstanding Pastry Chef. Patrick O’Connell, the chef/owner behind three Michelin starred Inn at Little Washington is one of the most regular winners having been awarded a James Beard medal five-times and has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his four decades of work at the Inn. All recipients receive a medallion etched with the image of James Beard and a certificate from the Foundation. Receiving an award is a great honour and privilege and a well-respected accolade in the industry. The James Beard Foundation is a national not-for-profit organisation based in New York City with a mission is to “celebrate, nurture, and honor chefs and other leaders making America's food culture more delicious, diverse, and sustainable for everyone.”
