The Long Table: a Street Food Project by chef Nuno Mendes

Street food has always been a part of our lives. Eating a hot dog or fish & chips on the streets was categorised in the past as a guilty pleasure for gourmets who wanted to protect their reputations. However, things have started to change…Tokyo now has Michelin starred restaurants with a street food background, and many top chefs have begun to get inspiration in the streets and markets.

The idea behind The Long Table – an outdoor food night market - has been a long-standing dream of the young Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes. It was only when he met the organisers of Bootstrap Company, a charity in charge of social and cultural projects based in East London Abbot Street, that the idea of an outdoor, night time market began to take shape.

The first Long Table took place on 25th November, and was a huge success with more than 300 people queuing outside the gates. The location was the backyard of the Bootstrap Building, where Nuno will open his new supper club next year.

There are four set dates, taking place on Fridays, from 6pm to 1am (the last one being 16 December), with live music, the best Yum Buns ever, Moro’s famous couscous, “avant-garde street food” from The Loft Project, and much more, turning East London into a kind of “ foodie’s Woodstock”. We were there and we loved it!
