About the list

From pizza to pita, dim sum to martinis, Chef Charles Namba knows his way around L.A.’s dining scene. The Camélia chef may have a fine-dining pedigree, but when it comes to his go-to spots, he’s all about bold flavors, comfort food, and kitchens with heart. Here, Namba shares his favorite places to eat in Los Angeles—where he turns when he’s craving Korean barbecue, crisp-edged dim sum, or a perfectly made martini.

Rosemead, United States

Sea Harbour in Alhambra is one of the best dim sum restaurants I know.

When I’m craving Korean food, I head to the corner of 8th and Vermont. Soowon Galbi serves up amazing food and good quality proteins. I like the beef tongue, shaved brisket/bulgogi and the short rib soup, which I wash down with shochu and a cold beer.

I love those restaurants where you really feel what the chef is doing—just like a person, this is different, unique but simple—and that’s what I find at Dunsmoor.

Chef Ori Menashe’s Middle Eastern restaurant is amazing. I just love that kind of food with all the pita bread and dips.

Since I started my career in pizza, this spot is always nostalgic to me. I like lighter pizzas with fresher tomato sauce so that you can eat a whole pizza and still feel good. I used to like Hawaiian but as I’m getting older, I don’t like pineapple on pizza. I like one or two toppings, like pepperoni and jalapenos. Or a simple mushroom pizza (as long as it’s not oyster mushroom but rather button mushroom).

Beverly Hills, United States

When I’m looking for a quick drink and consistent service, the bar at South Beverly Grill delivers. My drink of choice here is a gin martini.
