Topping almost every single list of 2022’s best television series, The Bear has been confirmed for Season Two, with the kitchen drama scheduled to return to Hulu in early summer with 10 delicious episodes for you to binge.
The Bear Season Two: what we know
The end of Season One left the door open for a lot more to happen to our favourite hospitality heroes with a big windfall for Carmy, allowing him to dream of opening the restaurant he always wanted. It won’t be plain sailing though, according to co-showrunners Joanna Calo and Christopher Storer.
Speaking to Variety, the two executive producers outlined what the future might bring for The Bear. ”Nobody’s fixed and everyone’s a work in progress,” said Storer. “Every second counts.”
The publication reports that Calo revealed season two "will home in on hospitality, taking care of others and making the cast’s lives a bit bigger," and that "Carmy will still be reeling from his brother’s death and his own demons."
Show creator Storer told Esquire that the newly cash-rich team will be looking to cook at a higher level, but that doesn’t mean they are going to lose the true grit and charm that made them so compelling to watch in Season One.
"In terms of the restaurant changing, it’s not that they’re going to lose all the charm of the restaurant," he said. "We’re going to deal with this in Season Two. It’s more like: How can we do this and maybe make some money? And maybe make it easier? And maybe – maybe – start from a place that’s not fucked? Instead of beating a dead horse and making this fuckin’ food that no one even wants to make, I see the promise in my sort of found family in the kitchen. Can we use that to build something freshly, now that we’ve all found each other in this stupid-ass system where things make no sense and people are putting veal stock on the top fuckin’ shelf of the walk-in?"
Of course, there is a considerable amount of interest in whether Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) will find love with kitchen stable mate Syd (Ayo Edebiri). When asked if love was in the stars for The Bear Season Two, White was non-commital, telling W Magazine, “This is my first time, just in recent weeks, even thinking about anything going on with anybody… I hope for Sydney’s sake that’s not going to be explored in later seasons. I just love their relationship [as it is]: the amount of respect they have for one another, and that they have a shared history, even if it’s not together. They’ve been through similar traumas and they really see one another. To add romance or sexuality would monkey up what I enjoy about their relationship."
Speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour, Storer explained more about the plot of Season Two. “It almost feels like Season One was sort of, 'Let's catch up', and Season Two is sort of like where the show properly begins, once we've met everyone and seen their backstory," he said.
"So it's been cool to just expand the world and just learn more about [the characters]… Season Two, really, it's about balance in a lot of ways, between time and what it means to start fresh and how you can start in a healthy direction.
"For somebody like Richie [the de-facto restaurant manager played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach], I think finding where he fits in is what he's looking for in Season Two."
No new cast members have been confirmed but the characters we know from Season One will remain, played by stars Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Abby Elliott, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Edwin Lee Gibson, and Matty Matheson.
