The electronics company Toshiba has launched a supermarket scanner that doesn't require a barcode. No longer will you have to stand puzzled at the self-checkout system, frantically trying to find the barcode on your item, as this new technology knows exactly what you're scanning.
Know as an Object Recognition Scanner, it works by scanning for colours and patterns to distinguish what items you're putting in the trolley. With many people avoiding the self-checkout because of the time it takes when barcodes are not displayed this could be yet another push in the direction of unmanned supermarkets.
