When it comes to vegan baking some ingredients are harder to substitute than others. Dairy milk? Try plant-based alternatives. Butter? Coconut oil and vegan buttery spreads are good options. But the texture and moisture of eggs are harder to replicate.
That's when knowing how to make aflax egg can make all the difference. Made with just two ingredients, these 'eggs' have a gel-like texture and work like wonders in cakes, cookies and other treats.
Benefits of Flax Seeds
There are many benefits to consuming flax seeds. They contain omega-3 fatty acids and are rich in fiber and protein. So a flax egg will be a healthy addition to your recipes.
What You'll Need
To make this awesome egg replacer you'll need ground flax seeds, which are easy to find in any grocery store. You may also buy whole flax seeds and pulverize them in a coffee grinder. You'll also need filtered water.
Recipe for how to make a flax egg
For one egg:
1 tablespoon of ground flax seeds
3 tablespoons of water
Mix together in a small bowl and let stand 5 minutes. Then use the flax egg in your recipes just like you would eggs. Multiply this recipe according to how many eggs you'd like to substitute.
A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
Since flax eggs are high in moisture you may need to adjust baking times. Some recipes - like banana bread - will take around 10 minutes more to bake, depending on your oven.
Also, the texture of your baked goods will be little denser that ones made with eggs.
