Kisser is a Japanese-inspired café in Nashville that draws from the tradition of the kissaten, a casual neighborhood spot built around comfort food, coffee, and community. Opened in 2023 by chefs Brian Lea and Leina Horii, the restaurant has quickly established itself as one of the city’s most sought-after daytime destinations.

Located in East Nashville’s Highland Yards, Kisser operates primarily as a lunch service, with a compact dining room and a tightly focused menu. The format is intentionally concise, centered on a handful of dishes that balance technical precision with a sense of familiarity and ease.

The menu is anchored by a few defining items. Handmade udon appears in rotating preparations, including a widely praised spicy miso version enriched with duck confit. Onigiri, served in a selection of fillings such as kabocha curry, snow crab, or cod roe, reflect the restaurant’s focus on Japanese comfort food. The chicken katsu sandwich, served on house-made milk bread with cabbage slaw and tonkatsu sauce, has become one of the restaurant’s most recognizable dishes.

Despite its relatively small footprint, Kisser has gained national attention, appearing on The New York Times Restaurant List and earning recognition from Bon Appétit and the James Beard Foundation. It has also been awarded a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, highlighting both quality and value.

The atmosphere is casual and energetic, with communal seating and a steady flow of guests that reinforces its identity as a neighborhood restaurant. The experience is deliberately unpretentious, with a menu designed to encourage repeat visits rather than one-time occasions.
