Where a Michelin-Starred Chicago Chef Gets His Indian Fix
About the list
After we close up at Indienne on Saturday night, my team and I often head to Hyderabad House for a comforting meal. It’s the kind of place that hits the spot after a long service. My go-to dishes are the goat haleem with paratha and the fried fish. It’s the kind of meal that instantly revives you.
Annapurna is my top choice when I’m in the mood for vegetarian food. I love coming here on a Sunday afternoon when I want something lighter and nourishing, especially after a busy week. I usually order some snacks or thali. It’s also a great spot to celebrate Indian festivals like Holi and Diwali.
When I need something quick and flavorful, Bundoo Khan is my favorite place for take-out orders. It’s a Pakistani restaurant on Devon Avenue known for its grilled meats. I always order one of their special rolls—or a kabab if I’m skipping the carbs.
I rely on Mughal Biryani House for catering orders—whether it’s at home or for our staff at the restaurant. I love their goat chukka and signature dum biryani. The portions are generous, making them perfect for feeding a crowd, and the quality is consistently excellent.
For authentic Andhra cuisine, Thalaiva’s Indian Kitchen is worth the special trip. Andhra food is known for its bold, fiery flavors, and Thalaiva’s does it well. This is where I go when I’m craving a big Sunday lunch—something hearty and deeply satisfying.
When I’m craving a quick biryani fix, Dastarkhwan is my go-to for mutton dum biryani. It’s another excellent to-go option—their fragrant rice and tender, slow-cooked meat make it a standout.
For something truly special, I always find myself returning to Thattu, a restaurant celebrating the flavors of Kerala. The chef-owner, Margaret Pak, and her husband, Vinod Kalathil, are great friends, and their food is truly soul-satisfying. Whether I’m there for lunch or dinner, their dishes always transport me back to the coastal flavors of South India.
