New cooking show Chef vs. Wild pitches chefs into the wilderness and charges them with foraging enough wild ingredients for a fine dining meal.

"Chef vs. Wild": a new cooking show format

Just when you thought that TV had run out of new cooking show formats, Chef vs. Wild comes along, a cross-over reality cooking show that merges MasterChef with Survivor. The result is an entertaining show that shows chefs’ inventiveness, determination and competitiveness in wild nature.

In each episode of Chef vs. Wild two chefs are helicoptered in to remote locations along with a survivalist and outdoor expert. They have to find and forage enough wild ingredients for a fine-dining meal. The series is produced by Leftfield Pictures and David Chang in conjunction with Vox Media Studios. The show is hosted by chef and adventurer Kiran Jethwa.

The chefs are not forced to prepare their meals over a campfire with a Rambo knife, as once they have gathered all their ingredients, they are then invited to the ‘wilderness kitchen’, where they will prepare a meal for host Jethwa and wild foods expert Valerie Segrest, who will choose a winner.

The participating chefs are already foraging enthusiasts with plenty of outdoor experience. They include Katie Coss, from Tulsa, a former executive chef at Sean Brock’s Husk in Nashville, and James Beard Award winner and author Alan Bergo

Chefs vs. Wild premieres on Hulu on 26 September.
