Netflix is rebooting the iconic cooking show Iron Chef - here’s what to expect from the much-anticipated series.
The original Iron Chef is considered one of the greatest cooking shows of all time, and became a cult classic for its energy and idiosyncrasies. The American version of the franchise first aired on Food Network from 2005 to 2018 as Iron Chef America.
The reboot is called Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend, and the format will follow the original. Each episode will see a rising star chef compete against the five ‘Iron Chefs'.
These five Iron Chefs are Marcus Samuelsson, Dominique Crenn, Ming Tsai, Curtis Stone and Gabriela Cámara. After eight episodes, the rising star with the highest score will face off against all five Iron Chefs, for the chance to win the golden knife and the title of ‘Iron Legend’.
Alton Brown will host the series, while American actor Mark Dacascos - a mainstay of the 2014 reboot Iron Chef America - makes a return to the new series. Kristen Kishfeatures as ‘The Chairman’, and a rotating panel of judges will feature the likes of Andrew Zimmern and Nilou Motamed.
During each episode of Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend, each rising-star contestant has 60 minutes to create four or five dishes, in the heat of the stadium kitchen. Contestants are charged with also creating a sixth ‘beauty plate’ to be served to the judges and hosts.
The official synopsis from Netflix about the reboot says: “The legendary Iron Chef series is reborn with a supersized approach to the ground-breaking culinary competition that started it all. It’s been called the toughest culinary challenge a chef will ever experience. This is where world-class cuisine meets high-octane sports. Five new trailblazing Iron Chefs will welcome brave Challenger Chefs to the reimagined Kitchen Stadium, where they'll face off and be pushed to the limits of endurance and creativity, as they cook up extraordinary culinary creations. The competition’s most successful Challenger will return to battle in a grand finale for the chance to be named the first ever "Iron Legend."
Netflix also plans to release Iron Chef Mexico and Iron Chef Brazil later this year.
