There’s no denying that social media has changed how the world operates, nowhere is this more true than in employment where potential hires can be quickly vetted through their online profiles.
Social media has also led to a number of cases where bosses or colleagues have discovered information they really shouldn’t have seen.
This is what happened recently to 30-year-old chef Alex Lambert who was sacked from his job for boasting online about feeding meat to vegans.
Lambert says his Instagram post came after a heated debate he was having with a “militant vegan” online and that there was no truth in what he said but this wasn’t enough to stop him losing his job at the Littleover Lodge Hotel restaurant in Derby.
His exact words were “my personal favourite is feeding vegans animal products and them not knowing.”
This might have been the end of it but many people decided to write one-star reviews on the hotel’s Facebook page which in turn led the hotel, who initially backed their chef, to sack him.
In a post on their Facebook page the hotel said:
Lambert strongly denies ever having fed animal products to vegans but admits that the comments were stupid. He said: “It was a stupid comment made to a vegan during an argument online.
“It started as a post I had made that essentially said ‘how do you know if someone is a vegan? Don’t worry, they will tell you’.
“That was in relation to a customer who had come in and was telling everyone they were vegan, it’s much healthier and better for them and anyone who eats meat is wrong.
“A militant vegan saw this post and began commenting, saying I should go get heart disease and I will be responsible for the death of my daughter by feeding her animal products.
“I lost my temper, which I think is understandable given her comments and said something completely stupid with the sole intention of p***ing her off. That is basically all it was.”
Many people have returned to the hotel's page to express their hapiness at the sacking of the chef but not everyone seems to agree with them.
Not everyone took the side of the chef...
