A US start-up company believe they can create meat using a 3D-bioprinter.
Modern Meadow is a company set up by father and son team Gabor and Andras Forgacs who believe that 3D printing is the next big thing, and they're not the only ones. The company is being backed by the venture capitalist Peter Thiel who was an early investor in Facebook and the co-founder of Paypal.
The idea is based on taking stem cells from animals and waiting for them to replicate many times in a lab. These are then placed inside the printer cartridge and used to print the desired shape - the cells naturally fuse at this point and form tissue.
The duo's idea is adding to research that has so far been used to try and print organs and replacement tissue for medical use.
Scientist and doctors hope to one day be able to print fully functioning replacement body parts using 3D bio-printing and if the Forgacs get their way, the same technology may also be used to serve your dinner.
