Back home, he adds, “apple crumble shows up whenever apples are good and someone needs cheering up.”
How to make Apple Crumble
01.
Prepare the Apples
  • Toss the sliced apples with the sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice, then transfer them to a baking dish.
02.
Make the Crumble
  • Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the brown sugar.
03.
Assemble the Crumble
  • Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples.
04.
Bake the Crumble
  • Bake at 350°F for 35 to 40 minutes, until the topping is golden and the apples are tender.
05.
Prepare the Custard
  • While the crumble bakes, heat the milk with the vanilla in a saucepan.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar.
06.
Cook the Custard
  • Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  • Return the mixture to the pan and cook gently over low heat, stirring continuously until thickened.
  • Do not allow the custard to boil.
07.
