Confusion reigns when it comes to the complex world of food labelling. From the information a label holds to the product it defines, it can sometimes feel like there's one rule, and that's to baffle the consumer.
Under new EU rules proposed in Brussels, veggie burgers could be rebranded as “veggie discs” while vegetarian sausages will become known as “veggie tubes”. Other protected words would include steak, sausage, escalope, burger and hamburger under the revised legislation.
“We felt that steak should be kept for real steak with meat and come up with a new moniker for all these new products. There is a lot to be done in this front, a lot of creativity will be needed,” said French socialist MEP Eric Andrieu, MEP in The Guardian. “People need to know what they are eating. So people who want to eat less meat know what they are eating – people know what is on their plate.”
