Bread is an inconic element in French gastronomy, so much so that a festival is dedicated to it every year (la Fete du pain).
On a visit to Paris head straight for the very best boulangerie the city has to offer and discover baguettes like you've never had before.
Best Boulangerie in Paris
1. Boulangerie Brun - Voted The Best Baguette in Paris

Boulangerie Brun won the 2017 prize for the best baguette in Paris. Located in the Butte-aux-Cailles district, the bakery managed to stand out against a total of 140 competitors as selected by a jury of professionals - including Guillaume Gomez, chef of the Elysée kitchens - and Parisians drawn by lot. Sami Bouattour is the baker who moved to Paris just three years ago. Even in his first year he had reached second place on the podium (in 2015).

3 - Le Grenier a Pain
In 2015, the same title was held by Djibril Bodian. This craftsman of Senegalese origin has even won the coveted prize (2010) twice thanks to his secret recipe which is now not only highly appreciated by the inhabitants of the 18th arrondissement but elsewhere.

4 - La Boulangerie de Thierry Marx
While Thierry Marx is an undisputed star chef, the cook is also a great bakery enthusiast. In his new shop, you will not only find a delicious traditional baguette but also real butter croissants, brioches, pastries and original sandwiches, including "breadmakis", a delight rolled on demand, probably inspired by another great Passion of the chef: Asian cuisine. The bonus? Thierry Marx, as with his restaurant, carefully chooses his products, all from sustainable agriculture and less than 200 km from Paris.

5 - Le Bricheton
The Bricheton is the kind of atypical place that Parisians in the west adore. In this bakery, open only 3 days a week for 3 hours, Maxime Bussy offers breads made from ancient wheat from the Semences paysannes association. Rye pies, khorasan wheat loaves, wholebread bread ... Old style breads are the stars!

6 - L'ÉPICERIE-DÉPÔT HUMPHRIS
Humphris is more like a grocery store than a traditional bakery. Here, there are vegetables grown by the father, but also bread made by the son, Dan, all produced from the wheat of their land or those of neighboring farmers in Yvelines. Whole bread, German pumpernickel, country bread ... It's hard to resist any of these breads cooked by wood fire.
Where? Humphris, 1 Milton Street, 9th District.
7 - DU PAIN ET DES IDÉES
Elected best baker of Paris by Gault & Millau 2010, Christophe Vasseur arrived late to the trade. Intended for a career as a senior executive, he eventually embarked on a career as a baker aged 33, as an apprentice in a shop in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. He finally passed his CAP as a free candidate in 2002 and today holds one of the few bakeries where everything is done in the old fashioned way. In his shop the range of products may be small but quality is high. Vasseur only uses natural leaven, and ferments his wands for 8 hours. If you go to his shop in the 10th arrondissement, taste the "bread of friends", a tasty bread with hazelnut and yellow bread. You'll also probably weaken at the sight of his famous chocolate pistachio, praline, lemon nut, etc rolls.
