What's in Season in September?

September is one of the best months to head to the farmers market. The abundance of produce is simply spectacular at this time of year thanks to the very last days of summer.

Depending on where you live you'll find everything from the first apples of the season to fresh broccoli, pumpkin, corn, kale, cucumbers, melons ... the list goes on.

If you are wondering what to do with all that fresh produce we've put together some recipes to inspire you. Take at look at what's in season in September:

Apples

Apple Crisp Cupcakes

We love apples because they are sweet, crisp and versatile.

Aside from the very obvious (yet always delicious) apple pie, apples are great tossed into salads, pureed into soups, sauces and smoothies.

Grapes

Take advantage of the last grapes of the season and use this sweet fruit in salads, punches, smoothies and baked goods.

Recommended recipe: Soft white grape cake

Green Beans

Saffron Potato Salad

One of our favourite ways to cook green beans is to blanch them until tender yet crisp. Green beans make a great low-carb snack, but are a wonderful addition to salads, casseroles and soups.

Recommended recipe: Saffron potato salad with green beans

Radicchio

Fennel Radicchio Salad

Crisp, colourful and sharp, radicchio adds a nice bite to any dish. Also known as Italian chicory, radicchio can stand up to strong cheeses so it is great in salads.

Radicchio will lose some of its pungency when cooked, but develop incredible richness.

Recommended recipe: Fennel and radicchio salad with gorgonzola

Corn

Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms

Corn always stands out for its sweetness and versatility. Mexican-style grilled corn is one of our favourite recipes, but you can enjoy corn in soups, salads, casseroles and breads

Recommended recipe: Bacon stuffed mushrooms with sweetcorn

Zucchini

Stuffed Zucchini

Enjoy this summer squash before the colder temperatures creep up.

Zucchini's mild flavour lends itself well to numerous preparations but salads, pastas and muffins are some of our favorite uses.

Recommended recipe: Stuffed zucchini with cheese souffle

Cabbage

Red Cabbage Salad

Have fun with cabbage this season by cooking with different varieties. Red cabbage adds a gorgeous hue to soups and salads, while white cabbage is great for stuffing. Napa cabbage, also known as Chinese cabbage, is tender and perfect for salads.

Recommended recipe: Red cabbage salad with apples and hazelnuts

Cauliflower

Cauliflower Bake

Everyone's favorite low-carb substitute for potatoes is finally in season. Take advantage and use cauliflower as a base for casseroles, soups, pizza crusts and much more.

Recommended recipe: Creamy cauliflower bake

Pears

Risotto with Pears

The delicate flavor of pears makes them a great snack. But pears are wonderful assets in the kitchen whether they be poached, blended into soups or baked into beautiful desserts.
