Elon Musk and Tesla are moving ahead with their much-anticipated restaurant, filing plans for a huge site in LA.
Musk first announced his desire to open an old-school diner back in 2018, when he tweeted: “Gonna put an old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in LA”. Now, a full pandemic later, it seems the electric car mogul’s proposals are coming to fruition, with plans filed this month for a 9,300-square-foot facility in Hollywood.
Where is the Tesla Restaurant?
The Tesla restaurant, which allows diners to pick up food and watch a movie while their car is recharging, will be built at Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood, replacing the Shakey’s Pizza that stands there. The plans include 29 stalls for charging Tesla vehicles. Restaurant and menu details have not been made available, however Musk did tweet in 2018 that he restaurant would accept the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.
The plans have not been universally welcomed, however, with tour company Esotouric Los Angeles, which specialises in preservation and history, called it “a Rte 66 loss”. Shakey’s Pizza has been operating on the site since 1964.
Musk’s plans include a 24-hour diner, with drive-in movie theatre, 245 foot LED movie screens and indoor and outdoor seating.
It is unclear whether Musk will be ojined in the venture by his chef brother Kimbal. The younger Musk owns The Kitchen Restaurant Group, a collection of community restaurants located in Colorado, Chicago and Indianapolis.
