A long line of people on the street is the first sign that Swan Oyster Depot is not a typical restaurant. For over a century, this San Francisco institution has remained committed to a simple format: a long marble counter, about eighteen stools, and a constant supply of fresh seafood. There are no reservations, and the bill of fare is a collection of classics that have defined the place since it opened in 1912. It is a cultural landmark as much as a dining destination, a connection to an earlier version of the city. The setup is direct and unfiltered. From a seat at the counter, diners watch as staff shuck oysters and prepare seafood drawn from both the East and West coasts. The Sancimino family, who have operated the depot since 1946, work with a practiced ease behind the counter, a backdrop of memorabilia and hand-drawn menus collected over decades. The atmosphere is bustling and without frills; the focus is squarely on the quality of the seafood. The offerings are a testament to this focus on quality. The kitchen has become known for its cracked Dungeness crab, served chilled when in season, and its Boston-style clam chowder. A recurring favorite is the Combination Salad, a generous serving of bay shrimp, prawns, and Dungeness crab meat. Other mainstays include shrimp and crab cocktail, smoked salmon, and various seafood salads. While most dishes are served cold, a few warm items like steamed lobster are also available. This dedication has earned Swan Oyster Depot a James Beard Award, recognizing it as an American Classic.
