Broken Spanish Comedor

At Broken Spanish Comedor, familiar Mexican flavors are reimagined through a modern Angeleno lens. The restaurant, located in Los Angeles, explores the nuanced possibilities of Latin American cooking, presenting dishes that are both innovative and rooted in tradition. The kitchen gained recognition for its ambitious use of heritage ingredients, transforming them into contemporary creations. Among the offerings that have defined the restaurant's identity is a large-format lamb neck tamal, a creation that showcases a commitment to technique and communal dining. Another recurring presence has been the pan-seared cod with brandade, potato, and a burnt habanero-crema sauce. These dishes exemplify the restaurant's culinary philosophy: honoring traditional recipes while confidently pushing them in new directions. This thoughtful practice extends to every part of the meal, from inventive masa preparations to complex sauces that provide layers of flavor. The name itself, Broken Spanish, hints at the fluid and evolving nature of culture and language in Southern California. This idea is reflected in the food, which draws from a wide array of influences to create a dialogue between the past and the present. The style feels personal and expressive, resulting in a dining occasion that is both exciting and comforting. The restaurant has carved out a unique space for itself, offering a perspective on Mexican food that is entirely its own.
