This week at FDL we visited Spain for its annual tomato food fight, explored the rising trend of quinoa and traveled to farmer's markets in Provence.

Wild Tomatoes

We kicked off the week with our coverage of the Tomatina Festival in Spain. Held in the town of Buñol, near Valencia, the festival is very unique in that participants throw tomatoes at each other.

This wild tomato-based food fight attracts over 50,000 visitors each year who use anywhere from 110 to 155 tons of tomatoes not fit for consumption as ammunition.

How Quinoa Achieved Stardom

From tomatoes we went on to explore one of the biggest food trends of the moment: quinoa. This protein-packed ancient grain was used by the Incas and is very popular across South America.

In recent years it's become the latest food fad as foodies reach for healthier options. But quinoa is also popping up in fine dining restaurants all over the world. How did this happen? Get the full scoop here

A Foodie Tour of Provence

As summer comes to a close we didn't want it to end without a tour through the wonderful farmer's markets in Provence. Famous for its lavender, the region offers a bounty of fresh herbs, produce and wonderful charcuterie.
