Celebrating James Bond: 50 Years After, Martini or Beer?

As fans around the world rejoice the 50th anniversary of James Bond on the big screen, the latest 007 film is stirring controversy over the spy's choice of beer

Happy James Bond Day! While an unofficial holiday, today marks 50th anniversary of 007 hitting the big screen with the release of Dr. No. That film marked the moment when James Bond went from being a character in Ian Fleming's novels to becoming a Hollywood legend.

Perhaps James Bond is best known for his trademark drink: a martini, shaken not stirred.  This particular preferrence has become a controversial point in the latest James Bond film, the upcoming Skyfall with Daniel Craig, who previously played the agent in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

In the film, James Bond is seen sipping Heineken beer, not martinis. This has disappointed fans who feel Hollywood is wrecking the Bond legacy by veerying from his hard-liquor ways. But Craig said the switch to beer was necessary due to film costs and defended the product placement (estimated at $45 million).

"This movie costs a lot of money to make, it costs nearly as much again if not more to promote, so we go where we can. The great thing is that Bond is a drinker, he always has been, it's part of who he is, rightly or wrongly, you can make your own judgement about it, having a beer is no bad thing, in the movie it just happens to be Heineken," Craig said in an interview with Moviefone.

Regardless of this recent beverage controversy, fans around the world are celebrating the Bond legacy in a myriad of ways. If you can't make it to nearest Bond party, make yourself a 007 martini and toast to the man who put a whole new spin on a classic cocktail.
