Tablescapes by Elizabeth McDonald

A collection of paintings by artist Elizabeth McDonald, who explores the act of dining and the dinner tables as proper landscapes. Enjoy the gallery!

Born and raised in Texas, artist Elizabeth McDonald earned a BFA at the University of North Texas and an MFA at the Glasgow School of Art. She has shown work - paintings, drawings, sculpture, installation, and video - in the US and the UK, and her work has been recognized by many prominent museums and galleries.

The pictorial series Tablescapes explores - as the name suggests - tables turned into landscapes: even when there are no people sitting at the table you can feel the action, the act of dining and sharing a meal. "I am not depicting truth in my paintings, nor am I simply inventing - McDonald states on her site - Instead, I explore an interweaving of reality and fiction similar to what is constructed during the recollection of dreams and distant memories. I paint simultaneously from two angles; the concrete and the intuitive. My paintings have an anecdotal quality but not a singular narrative. They are often based in reality but become skewed towards the uncanny through the use of color, composition, and invented detail. There is a balance between dissonance and beauty; one is left with only precarious assumptions of subject yet one is not driven away by the uneasiness within the painting. Instead of presenting a complete and coherent story I simply attempt to reconcile the viewer to the painting's inexplicability."

Elizabeth McDonald will exhibit at GreyDuck Gallery in Austin from May 15th to June 21st 2015. In the meanwhile, enjoy this collection of paintings.
