With the ever increasing want to learn new kitchen techniques and hone our culinary skills, more and more people are turning to apps to lend a helping hand in the kitchen.

2012 saw a number of new culinary applications launched with each one offering innovative methods and solutions for our kitchen needs - we've even seen a tablet device made specifically for the kitchen.

It's certainly been a social year with millions of people now connecting through websites, forums and social networks - this trend of strong online communities has also been echoed within food apps. Apps like Supper King which encourages people to open their doors and cook dinner for strangers - a new way to explore the world.

We've seen Facebook buy Instagram for a whopping $1 billion and with it the rapid rise of mobile food photography apps, from those that cover basic lighting to full blown editing and filter apps to really make our food shots sparkle.

FDL got in on the revolution with the launch of our The Perfect Host application, now in its third edition, the app is packed full of Italian recipes, wine and water pairing tips, dining suggestions and some great finds on places to buy great Italian products in London.

Then there was the app announcement of the year when the legendary Ferran Adrià launched his elBulli cooking application - a beast of technology packed full of knowledge from Ferran and his team at elBulli.
