Mitch Lienhard is the Winner of the USA Final of S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2016
Mitch Lienhard of Manresa restaurant in Los Gatos, California has been named the winner in the S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2016 regional competition for the USA and will advance to the Grand Final in October alongside mentor and World's Best Female Chef, Dominique Crenn.
The USA regional competition took place on 26 July 2016 at the Astor Center in New York City, where a local jury composed of renowned chefs, including Dominique Crenn of Atelier Crenn in San Francisco, New York City-based chefs Emma Bengtsson of Aquavit, Bryce Shuman of Betony and Alex Stupak of Empellón, and the 2015 USA Young Chef finalist Vinson Petrillo of Zero George Street in Charleston, South Carolina were charged with judging each of the 10 semi-finalists' dishes based on the criteria of five "Golden Rules": ingredients, skills, genius, beauty and message.
The Winning Dish
"The level of creativity and culinary expertise demonstrated by all chef competitors was inspiring," said chef Dominique Crenn. Yet only one young chef could take the title of USA finalist, and it was chef Lienhard's signature dish of "roast duck with spiced orange and yams" that impressed the judges the most.
Speaking of the winner, Crenn went on to say: "We were particularly impressed with Chef Liehnard who demonstrated the qualities necessary to stand out on a global stage. We feel confident that he will be a fantastic contender at the The S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2016 Grand Finale."
"I'm thrilled to represent the United States at the Grand Finale in Milan," said the winning Chef de Cuisine. "The competitors were world class and I'm honoured to be selected by this esteemed panel of judges. I'm looking forward to working with and learning from chef Dominique Crenn and to meeting the young chefs from around the world for the competition."
In the Grand Final, held in Milan, Mitch Lienhard will compete against 19 other regional finalists from around the globe in front of an esteemed panel of seven judges: Gaggan Anand, Elena Arzak, Mauro Colagreco, Carlo Cracco, Wylie Dufresne, David Higgs and Roberta Sudbrack.
