Daniel Nates is the Latin America and Caribbean Winner
Following remarkable performances by 10 of the most talented young chefs across Latin America, Daniel Nates from restaurant Maizal in Mexico has been announced as the winner of the S.Pellegrino Young Chef Latin America regional final, and will advance to the global Grand Final on 13 October, 2016 in Milan, Italy.
With his winning signature dish entitled Quiltamal, Nates succesfully outshone the nine other semifinalists, as selected by ALMA, as they cooked head to head during the regional challenge on 7 June at the Kitchen Club in Santiago de Chile.
A local jury composed of renowned chefs Rodolfo Guzmán (Chile), Rodrigo Oliveira (Brazil), Diego Muñoz (Perú) and Guillermo González (México) tasted the signature dishes prepared by each of the semifinalists and selected Nates as the winner, based on the judging criteria of the five “Golden Rules”: ingredients, skills, genius, beauty and message.
“I’m thrilled to represent Mexico in Milan,” said Nates. “The Grand Final in October will be a great opportunity to meet and compete against other young chefs from all over the world." Reflecting on his choice of dish the Mexican winner added: "I found inspiration in my parents, who are biologists and since childhood I have loved different herbs and leaves."
Nates will now participate in the global finals with the opportunity of winning the prestigious title of S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2016. Guillermo Gonzalez Beristain will mentor the young chef, as well as accompanying him to the final, where Nates' dish will be presented in front of seven celebrated international judges.
