Food Events: What's On in May 2017

This month's line-up of food events stretch around the world, from Bali to Berlin, and Slow Fish to Michelin food aboard a luxury train.

Calendars at the ready, May is all all about variety when it comes to exciting food events around the globe.  From the word's biggest grilling contest in Memphis to Michelin starred dinners lakeside, there's something to tempt most appetites!

Global Food Events in May 2017

Care's  - The Chef Ethical Days

From May 21 to 24, the beautiful island of Salina, in the Aeolian archipelago of Italy, will host the summer edition of CARE's - The Chef ethical Days.

The focus of the four days, involving 18 chefs from around the world with journalists and industry experts, will be the attention and protection (the idea of "Take Care of"), of the sea rather than the mountains this time round. Chef Norbert Niederkofler, creator of Care's,found synergy with Martina Caruso of the Hotel Signum on Salina and the Tasca d'Almerita family of Capofaro Resort, as well as similarities with its "Dolomites": both landscapes are UNESCO heritage areas, rich in parks and nature reserves, with territorial enhancement policies.

The event program includes moments of comparison, exclusive dinners, land and sea excursions, fishing, or foraging, tasting and masterclass cooking, with the participation of chefs such as Andrea Berton, Moreno Cedroni, Pino Cuttaia and Giuseppe Iannotti from Italy, David Kimch from the United States and Andreas Caminada from Switzerland.

Terroir Chef Symposium, Berlin

Internationally acclaimed chefs, including Ana Ros the World's Best Female Chefgather in Berlin from 13 to 16 May 2017 for S.Pellegrino sponsored, Terroir Berlin. Six-Course Beach Dinner with Tim Butler, W Koh Samui, Thailand

Eat Me star Tim Butler will present a six course beach dinner at W Koh Samui on 19-20 May Bangkok in collaboration with Sanpellegrino.

The menu includes dishes like a hamachi crudo, the Italian version of sashimi, charred squid with chorizo and capsicum, Omi Beef in tataki style and a course of smoked beef tongue with tripe and black garlic aioli.

May 20 will also feature a fashion show, a DJ and mixologist.

Five internationally renowned chefs debate food sustainability during the S.Pellegrino sponsored highlights of Los Angeles Times Food Bowl on 5 May. 

Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francescana), Mario Batali (B&B Hospitality Group), Roy Choi (Kogi), Dominique Crenn (Atelier Crenn) and Mary Sue Milliken (Border Grill) will  all take to the stage to share their personal visions on shaking-up the food system, in what is set to be a rousing event.

Scenic Train Travel with Michelin Tasting Menu, Portugal

All aboard the Presidential Train in Portugal for a luxury rail trip through the Alto Douro wine region while enjoying a four course tasting menu from a Michelin starred chef. This months line-up includes: Esben Holmoe Bang of Oslo’s Maaemo, Norway's only three star restaurant (3-7 May), local star chef Pedro Lemos (10 and 11 May), and João Rodrigues of Lisbon’s one Michelin star Feitoria restaurant  (12-14 May).
