Here's What It's Like To Be A Food Critic

Being a food critic is one of those careers that seems so fascinating. People assume free food and wine, moderate fame and traveling are all part of the package. But what is it really like to be a food critic?

Jonathan Gold, the restaurant critic at the Los Angeles Times, offers a glimpse of his work life in this video from Potluck. Joining him at the table is filmmaker Laura Gabbert to talk about City of Gold, a documentary that follows Gold on his quest to find the best food in the City of Angels.

Gabber says Gold’s writing helped her discover Los Angeles when she first moved to the city. She says his style of food criticism isn’t so much "criticism" as it is an exploration of “a place and culture.”

Gold says his writing reflects the food that he loves although “there is usually a firewall between the chef and the critic.”
