How to Find the Iron in Your Cereal

Many of us read the labels on the products we’re buying looking for all sorts of different information. How much sugar, fat, energy, vitamins and in some cases the mineral content of food.

You may have noticed when buying cereals that they list a number of minerals; zinc, calcium, iron and magnesium to name a few, but did you know that this means that foods actually contain these minerals, like iron for example.

The video below is actually taken from a school teaching resource but shows perfectly how you can quickly demonstrate the inclusion of iron in your next bowl of cereal.

The first demonstration shows how a few flakes of cereal floating on water can be attracted by magnets and the second shows a quick way in which you can actually separate the iron from the food.

If you’ve got young children at home or just want to impress your friends the next time you’re hosting a dinner party, this is a great video to have some fun with.
