From Japan to Alaska and New York, Takeo Okamoto dazzled the world with his ice sculptures, massive handcrafted masterpieces that gained admiration from thousands.
FDL recently heard the unfortunate news of the ice sculptor's recent passing. His loss was lamented by pastry chef Johnny Iuzzini who blogged and tweeted about his death.
A former sushi chef, Takeo turned his passion for making life-sized ice sculptures into an award-winning career. Along with his son Shintaro, he opened the Okamoto Studio in New York City to showcase the grandeur of ice carving. Since 2003, the father-son team have created a legacy of awe-inspiring ice art.
With that in mind, FDL would like to remember Takeo for what he was: a genious at transforming the complexity of ice into fascinating sculptures that were bigger than life.
