Food Art: 3D Printed Salt Igloo

The structure you see above is actually made from salt. It's called the Saltygloo and was created as part of an experiment in 3D printing.

The salt was harvested from Redwood City in San Francisco. It took 336 translucent  3D printed panels using a material made from salt and glue to make the finished structure.

The salt structure is on display at the Museum of Craft and Design until January 5th, 2014.

Below is a video that shows the huge shadows made when someone walks inside the salty igloo.
