You are in Home > Blog > Out of the Blue > Food Art Against Food Waste: Bread Tables By Studio Rygalik
By Rose Y. Colón-Singh on
The amount of food waste in Vienna is enough to feed half the population in Graz, a town 200 km south of the Austrian capital. This fact is what inspired an art studio in Vienna to turn food waste into art. The object in question? Bread.
Studio Rygalik built furniture out of old baguettes to prove how handy and sturdy stale bread can be. The bread tables were built for an event called ''Bread Experience,'' during which visitors sampled bread dishes served on the elegant baguette tables.
Food waste is a huge problem in Europe, where experts estimate 50% of all edible food is wasted. According to United Nations, one third of the global food supply goes to waste. These devastating facts prompted a Food Waste Bill in the UK and also inspired Austrian photographer Klaus Pichler to create still-life images of food waste into for his photographic project 'One Third'.
