Leche Smith is a New York based artist and baker with over 33k followers on her Instagram account, where she posts photos of her bread sculptures.
Recently named by the New York Times as a young New Yorker "Poised for Creative Greatness" she envisages the humble loaf as an artistic medium, where most of us have seen it as a humble vehicle for our favourite toppings: "Your page somehow makes me emotional about bread" comments one of her followers.
Aside from making bread sculptures, both fresh or stale, Smith has also expanded her interest in the complexity of bread by travelling further afield. On a recent trip to Rajasthan, India, she learnt more about chapati and paratha history and techniques: “I’m interested in cultural anthropology with bread as the lens,” she told the paper.
Smith's most recent project, Bread on Earth, is an online initiative to share stories and recipes about bread from around the world: “It’s going to be a virtual hub for what the kitchen and oven space used to represent,” she goes on to say.
