The World’s 50 Best Restaurants sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna has just come and gone again for another action packed edition, with Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana claiming the title of World’s Best Restaurant for a second time.
Gluttonomy has also produced its annual infographic looking at the big numbers behind the event.
The graphic shows how the list, which is derived from the votes of an Academy comprising over 1000 international culinary experts, who each choose the 10 best restaurants they've visited in the last 18 months, is still dominated by male-led restaurants in Europe, a frequent criticism, with just four of the restaurants on the list having a female head chef – two up on last year. (The omission of Dominique Crenn’s Atelier Crenn entirely from both the top 50 and the 51-100 list was a big talking point this year).
It also shows how a core of 21 restaurants has stayed on the list for the past five years – regulars like El Celler de Can Roca or Mugaritz, both in Spain, which incidentally has seven restaurants on the list, more than any other country.
