A company in London claim to be developing the world's first ever underground farm.
Richard Ballard and Steven Dring who came up with the idea have teamed up with the Michelin starred Chef Michel Roux Jr. and Zero Carbon Foods to build a 2.5acre farm that will sit under London's North Line in old World War two air raid shelters.
The farm, which provides water using hydroponics technology and light using artificial lighting, is set to open for production in September with the first batch of ingredients including salad greens, mini vegetables, edible flowers and micro herbs.
It might seem like a crazy idea to take our food industry underground but with growing concerns attached to scarcity of land and the increased costs and pollution associated with the transportation of foods from rural farms to urban areas, underground farms could well help to ease these problems in the future.
