The Kitchen Library - Borrow The Equipment You Need

Ever decided to make a dish only to find half way through that you’re missing a valuable piece of equipment? Or, have you ever wanted to test a new kitchen gadget before buying?

There’s always a few dishes you can’t make at home because you just don’t have the right equipment and a new start up in Toronta thinks they have the solution with, The Kitchen Library, a way to rent a whole list of cool kitchen gadgets for a period of four days.

The nonprofit company was started by Dayna Boyer when she wanted a new juicer but couldn’t possibly justify the high price tag for a device she would not use all the time.

The library currently has a list of around 100 different kitchen tools edging to more specialised tasks. We’re talking a pasta maker, Vitamix, an ice-cream maker or a dehydrator - you’re not going to use the library for a knife.

Users pay an annual fee of $50 to join the library and have access to all the inventory - much of which has been donated. The idea plays right into the growth of sharing economies and is certainly something that could prove useful to he adventurous home cooks of Toronto - it will be interesting to see if other communities start to open similar libraries.

Just like the old days of rewinding a movie before taking it back to the video store, users are expected to clean each item before returning.
