50% of Young People Use Social Media for Food and Drink Advice

Around 50% of Young Adults will refer to social media reviews and recommendations before they try a new restaurant.

Research from the financial company Delloitte showed that of the 3,000 18-35-years-olds they surveyed 61 percent would consult social media for advice on food and drink. In the 35-54-year-old range around 31 percent claimed to consult social media for food review with only around 14 percent of the 55+ range using the services for recommendations.

The survey also found that sites like Trip Advisor and Yelp which contain user generated reviews are having less of an impact on where we choose to eat with only 24 percent of those surveyed saying they only looked at the sites for discounts and not the reviews.

It's an interesting study and shows how strong focus on social media campaigns can be one of the most beneficial advertising revenues for a restaurant - after all - isn't social media just digital word of mouth?
