Kulinarische Auslese 2014: the Best German and Austrian Restaurants Revealed

Finally, the best chefs in Germany and Austria have been revealed thanks to the 15th annual S.Pellegrino Kulinarische Auslese awards, a star-studded event held in Frankfurt: in Germany the top chef position was shared by three chefs, Harald Wohlfahrt, Joachim Wissler and Helmut Thieltges. Rudolf Obauer and Heinz Reitbauer Jun shared the title for best chef in Austria.

This year's awards ceremony presented a series of special awards. Among them was the Acqua Panna Best New Restaurant of the Year in Germany given to Wolfgang Becker from Becker's XO (Trier), in Austria was given to Robert Bauer at KUKKA (Leogang).

The Acqua Panna Female Chef Award for Germany went to Iris Bettinger (read the interview here) from Hotel Reuter in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. In Austria, the best female chef award was granted to Ulli Hollerer-Reichl (read the interview here) from Zum Blumentritt in St. Aegyd am Neuwalde.

Markus Berlinghof of Hotel Louis C. Jacob in Hamburg received the Acqua Panna Best Sommelier award. In Germany, the Acqua Panna award for the restaurant that improved most within the ranking went to Bobby Bräuer from EssZimmer in München. In Austria, the same award was given to Thomas Riederer from T.O.M am Kochen in Leutschach.

Last but certainly not least, the Acqua Panna Award for Excellent Hospitality was given to Simon Oberhofer from Hotel Castel in Meran.

Aside from the awards sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, the chefs also celebrated the launch of the latest edition of the Kulinarische Auslese guide, which combines the results of seven top culinary guides: Michelin, Gault Millau, Varta, Der Feinschmecker, Schlemmer Atlas, A la carte and Falstaff. The guide is also available as a free app to download for anyone wishing to explore the wonderful cuisine of Germany and Austria: 2014 edition will be available within few weeks.
