The internet has gone crazy with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, with everyone from your neighbor to celebrities and chefs all dumping ice cold water over the heads for charity. While it's for a good cause, the stunt has been criticized for wasting a precious resource. In order to conserve water, an Indian journalist has found a creative alternative for the challenge: rice.

She's created the #RiceBucketChallenge, which involves donating a bowl of rice from your kitchen to person in need (sadly, there are no videos of people showering themselves with rice). After making their donations, all participants are invited to post a picture of their good deed on the challenge Facebook page, which was created on August 23rd and has already amassed 24,000 followers.

“The idea of dunking oneself in icy cold water, shrieking in horror and then uploading the bizarre video felt preposterous. I wanted to just do something local, meaningful without wasting anything, ” journalist Manju Latha Kalanidhi told CityLab . “So rice replaced water here,” she said, adding that she choose rice because it rhymes with ''ice.''

Although we can't deny the allure of seeing the world's best chef get drenched in a bucket of ice water, we're pretty keen on saving natural resources, especially in places where access to fresh water is limited.  the #RiceBuketChallenge.

Do you think the #RiceBucketChallenge will catch on?
