Peru has been crowned the gastronomic capital of South America in the latest edition of the World Travel Awards 2014, which recognize excellence in the field of tourism across the globe.

Aside from being named South America's Leading Culinary Destination for the second time since 2012, Peru also received awards in two other categories: South America's Leading Cultural Destination and South America's Leading Heritage Destination.

For the title of leading culinary destination, Peru beat out competitors Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela, all of which have rich gastronomic traditions of their own.

The winners were revealed at the World Travel Awards South & Central America Gala Ceremony 2014 held in Quito, Ecuador. Elizabeth Astete, Peru's ambassador in Quito, was on hand to receive all three awards (pictured above).

Peru also holds the distinguishing title of being home to Astrid & Gastón Casa Moreyra, currently the best restaurant in Latin America. The country is gearing up to host the 2014 edition of Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants awards, which will be held on September 3rd in Lima.
