Spanish chef Andoni Luis Aduriz, the mastermind behind the acclaimed San Sebastián restaurant Mugaritz, has been awarded the 2012 Witzigmann Prize for innovation.

The Witzigmann Prize recognizes culinary excellence, innovation and projects in sustainability and social responsibility.  It was established in 2004 and was named after Eckart Witzigmann, the pioneer of German haute cuisine. Past recipients include Ferran Adria, Daniel Boulud, Juan Mari and Elena Arzak, Alice Waters, Thomas Keller and Roland Trettl.

Andoni's ''techno-emotional'' cuisine, which has been the subject of a documentary, was evaluated by a panel of judges composed of peers who have received the coveted prize in the past seven years. The chef used Twitter to spread the news and tell followers he is ''very excited'' about receiving such an honor.

But Andoni, who trained at Ferran Adriá's elBulli, is no stranger to accolades. Mugaritz has been awarded 2 Michelin stars and currently ranks third on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, sponsored by S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna

Congratulations, chef!
