By Tom Jenkins on
Mario Batali made sure his friends the Gaffigans celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary in style by designing a tasting menu with a difference at his New York restaurant Del Posto.
Writer and producer Jeannie Gaffigan is currently recovering from major brain surgery and is still having trouble eating solids, so her husband Jim, a comedian, decide to email Batali asking for suggestions for where to eat good soup in New York.
But Batali insisted they celebrate at Del Posto and when they got there they were stunned to find he’d created a seven course soup-only menu especially for them.
“I was trying to find a nice place for us to celebrate but given Jeannie can not comfortably eat solids I was hoping to find a place that did amazing soups (yes, in July),” says Jim in an Instagram post. “I knew Mario was on vacation but I hoped he could point me in the right direction. Mario responded insisting that we come to Del Posto ... When we arrived we saw that Mario had created a custom tasting menu of various gourmet soups with accompanied wines or cocktails. Of course the whole experience was insanely amazing but the generosity of kindness and compassion by Mario was most moving.”
Take a look at the special tasting menu below.
