Jess Kildetoft Sørensen, 34-year old head sommelier of London’s Danish Steakhouse Mash, has been awarded the title of Best Sommelier of the Nordic Countries 2015 at the final competition held on 11th October 2015.
”I came in second at the Danish championship in February, so to finally claim the title as Sommelier of the Nordic Countries 2015 is a great victory,” says Mr Kildetoft Sørensen.
In the competition which qualified him for the Nordic championship, Mr Kildetoft Sørensen had to fight against one Dane, two Swedes, two Finns, two Icelanders and two Norwegians. After qualifying for the finale Mr Kildetoft competed with a Swede and a Finn in four challenging categories: matching of wine and food, decantation of red wine, adjustment of wine list and a blind tasting.
The award is even more relevant if you think that Jess Kildetoft Sørensen is a relative newcomer to the sommelier scene having only worked as a wine professional for 6 years after obtaining prior restaurant experience.
The sommelier now studies for the exam in one of the most prestigious sommelier courses of the world, Court of Master Sommeliers, in December.
Jess has been an associate at MASH London Restaurant for the last one and a half years. Formerly filling a position as Head Sommelier at another London-restaurant, Alyn Williams at the Westbury in Mayfair, he has been in the restaurant business since the age of 18, working at different restaurants in both Denmark and London. Jess has a passion for German white wine along with Piemonte and Bourgogne.
